Mahoromatic was a very bipolar series. At it's best, it combined light comedy with a very dark story, and it could have both light and dark moments in a single episode. Unfortunately, the series suffered from not being able to properly explain its dark backstory. The ending, while not totally bad, was confusing and a departure from the rest of the series.

Thankfully, the summer special ranks with the best of the light episodes. It features Mahoro leading the female cast of the series on a mission to confiscate Suguru's porn collection, which the male cast (and Slash, against his better judgement) fight to save. The result is an often hilarious episode.

The paradox of Mahoromatic is that it is (among other things) an ecchi series where the main character constantly exclaims "I think being perverted is wrong." So we're treated to a scene of the girls plotting how to capture the porn while they're all naked in a bathouse.

While never really deviating from the generally light tone, there are some nifty character moments explaining how Suguru inherited his love of pornography from his Father, while Mahoro got her idea that "being perverted is wrong" from the same place.

The oddest thing revealed here is that Chizuko-chan wears leopard-print panties. That was unexpected.

This was a very good OVA. If you liked the light episodes of Mahoromatic, regardless of what you thought about the ending, watch this.
